Methodology and corrections

How every case file in this index labels what it says, and how to tell us when something is wrong.

Three labels

Fact. A Fact line links a primary record: a court docket or order, a government filing or release, a congressional record, an SEC or FEC filing, a tax form, or the person’s own words on video or on the record. If you follow the link, you can read the record yourself.

Reported. A Reported line links a named news outlet. It says what that outlet reported. It is not upgraded to Fact until a primary record is linked.

Commentary. Commentary is opinion: the file’s own reading of the record, or a named commentator’s. It is labeled so it is never mistaken for a record.

Where a file looked for a record and did not find it, it says so in a “Not located as of the last check” line instead of filling the gap.

A filing is not a finding

A complaint, an indictment, a motion, an affidavit, a referral, or an impeachment resolution being introduced is an accusation or a request. It is not a judgment, a conviction, or a removal. Case files say which stage a matter has reached: introduced is not voted on, and voted on is not removed. A stay or a denial of a stay is not a ruling on the merits.

Last checked

Each case file carries one “Last checked” date in its footer. That is the date its sources were last reviewed. Events after that date may not be reflected yet.
